On Why the Pen Is Mightier than the Keyboard
Sunday, November 29th, 2009It can sometimes appear as though handwriting is a dying art, it’s one that still is fundamental in numerous areas of life. A written missive expresses more gravitas than a typed letter, such as an application for a job, an invitation or an apology.
You might suppose it’s a recent phenomena of the masses shunning hand writing and using a computer instead, yet way back to the late 19th century, there were cries that hand-writing was being ignored due to the invention of those times : the typwriter. Now in the 21st century, the blame is being linked to the usage of computer keyboards.
Nevertheless, there still exists a strong requirement for handwriting ability in academia and the business world. Penned missives are considered as far more authentic, they show the author has deliberated over her words, while showing more deference to the reader. During this age of canned responses, the hand-written missive has never been more powerful.
I must confess to something. I have often been caught out with my own awful hand writing – made worse by decades of relying on my computer keyboard. In situations where I’ve had to put pen to paper, my writing’s been a sloping scrawl. That can be embarrassing. What did I do? I handwrote whenever the chance came to do so, and my writing improved greatly. Therefore it’s wise to improve your hand-writing by practise.
Another point is to find a pen you are comfortable with, with refills. A great set of pens are the illustrious mont blanc fountain pens set. This allows you to improve your style with the same pen.
