Six critical steps to prepare for a Job Faire

Standing out at a Career Faire can make a difference in your job hunting. Career Faires are starting to pick up, and Dice is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a Silicon Valley Job Fair in January, 10 companies as showing up, and Dice has 82 career faires scheduled for 2010 across the States.

How do you stand out at a Career Fair? The rivalry can be significant, but you can help yourself stick out from the crowd with advance planning. At AA-Careers, we have a straight-forward six-step process to prepare. Planning to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, research the organizations that are going and pick your targets. Use the internet to check out the companies that are there ahead of time. Go to their sites and see if they have their jobs listed. Pick a limited number to go after, and get ready to spend an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 8 in a day, and 3-5 is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring organization, you want to know: recent news, key product lines, and contacts you know. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You will end up with with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job openings on the web, read them to see what the hiring department is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the requirements of the job. Make the language match. If the hiring organization calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring organization.

Third, create a ‘brief sales pitch’ for each likely organization/position combination. Write down a 90 second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat verbally depicting why you are a great prospect for that position. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet people at the job booth.

Fourth, modify your resume for each position. The objective on your resume should exactly match the position you’re going after. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the accomplishments and skills that most clearly match the job requirements. Especially at a Job Fair, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be quick to see that you’re a match based on your resume.

Fifth, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be well groomed. Don’t over do-it (this isn’t a date!) and don’t underdress (no jeans or t-shirts, no matter how much you paid for them). Avoid strong cologne or perfume.

Finally, practice your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each opportunity – bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a distinctly labeled folder. Keep them in a lightweight briefcase or folio.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

Elliptical trainers are the hottest of the hot in fitness equipment. They are easy to use, and provide a great workout. Using an elliptical machine will give you a great cardio workout, similar to that of running, and will tone your lower body as well. And, because the impact is less than that of walking, even those of us with not so great knees can use an elliptical trainer without pain. Many people are finding the elliptical trainer to be such a great workout that they aren’t interested in doing anything else. However, no one machine can give the perfect workout. So, how does the elliptical machine stack up against other ways of working out? Well, if you take a closer look, you’ll find that elliptical training has distinct advantages, but a few disadvantages too.

One of the great benefits of elliptical trainers is that it provides an aerobic workout through a weight bearing exercise. Running does this, of course, but working out on an elliptical trainer provides an impact to your joints comparable to walking. In addition, many people report that working out on an elliptical trainer feels like less work than working out on a treadmill. Plus, if you use the upper poles on the elliptical machine, you are working your upper body as well. With a treadmill, you get no upper body workout.

Serious Runners Take Note

But, what if you are training for a marathon? Here’s where a treadmill has a real advantage over the elliptical. If you are training to be a runner, you need to run. The gliding motion of the elliptical machine won’t provide you training comparable to running in terms of preparation for a race.

Another issue you should consider is your need to build muscle. If you are looking to build bulk, you will still need to lift weights. Elliptical trainers provide great cardio workouts, and are great for toning your legs and arms, but they won’t build bulk. For a complete training regimen, it is best to alternate using the elliptical trainer with weight machines and free weights a few days a week.

Impact Is Not All Bad

One final issue about elliptical trainers – the very thing that makes them great also has its own disadvantage. Elliptical trainers are so popular because they provide a low impact workout. But impact has its advantages, especially if you don’t have knee problems. Your body responds to the shock of the impact of exercise by building new bone cells, thereby increasing your bone density. So, if your knees are healthy enough to withstand the impact, running will protect your bone health in the long run.

The most important issue when it comes to any exercise is longevity. You need to find an exercise that you can stick with. If you have joint or knee problems, an elliptical trainer can allow you to workout more easily than other weight bearing exercises. But, if you love to run, and are healthy enough to do so, the elliptical trainer might not be for you. It is beneficial to try out both machines, and, if you’re buying a machine, be sure to check out elliptical trainer reviews as well as those on treadmills. Be assured that both can help you improve your cardiovascular health, lose weight, and gain overall fitness.

So which exercise machine is best: the treadmill or the elliptical trainer?

While treadmills are still the #1 piece of home exercise equipment, elliptical trainers are quickly catching up. This leaves many people wondering ‘Should I buy an elliptical trainer or a treadmill?’

While there are definite differences between the two, it really boils down to you – the buyer. This article lays out the benefits of both the treadmill and the elliptical so you can make an informed decision and choose the best machine for you.

Treadmill Benefits:

Great for runners, walkers and joggers:

The treadmill is still the machine of choice for those who prefer running, jogging or even walking.

It’s obviously a smarter choice for the dedicated runner/jogger than an elliptical trainer. Plus it can help you train even in the winter months when you don’t want to run outside.

  Suitable for any exerciser:

Walking is a simple form of exercise that anyone can do – from beginner to seasoned athlete. It doesn’t take much coordination.

You don’t have to be supercoordinated to figure out how to use a treadmill whereas elliptical trainers can sometimes be a little tricky to use – especially for beginners.

  Provides workout variety:

A treadmill also provides workout variety of a different kind than the elliptical trainer. A treadmill allows you to walk, run, jog, walk uphill, do intervals and programs. You can even build in upper body handweights to work your arms, back and shoulders.

Elliptical Trainer Benefits:

Lower impact on your joints than a treadmill:

What is interesting is that this lack of impact on the joints allows the user to burn roughly the same amount of calories as treadmills with the impression of putting out considerably less effort.

So you burn the same amount of calories while feeling like you did less work. (This is called the ‘Rate of Perceived Exertion’)

This lower impact also makes the elliptical trainer a great choice for those with knee or hip problems, the elderly or even rehabilitation patients.

  Provides an overall body workout:

With the dual-action upper body arms as well as the foot pedals, you are getting an overall total body workout. Whereas the treadmill mostly focuses on the lower body, the elliptical works your entire system for an overall cardiovasculer workout.

  Excellent workout variety:

One feature that is often overlooked on an elliptical is the opportunity to move in both a forward and backward direction.

When you go backward you are targeting a different set of muscles than when you go forward (hamstrings vs. quadriceps). This helps add variety to your workout and keeps you motivated.

So those are some advantages of both elliptical trainers and treadmills. Is one machine better than the other? It really depends on who you are and what YOU enjoy doing.

Here’s the bottom line:

If you enjoy using a specific exercise machine more than others, you will exercise more often – which means more calories burned, more weight lost and a better body achieved. That is the best exercise machine for you.

One final note: Remember that whichever machine you choose – with exercise equipment you basically get what you pay for. Many people buy cheap equipment and then pay for it later in the form of equipment repairs, joint problems and painful injuries. Make sure you buy a high quality brand name machine with a solid warranty that was built to last.

Since I recently received my very own juicing machine, I have experienced a great sense of wellness and well-being. It’s not only due to the health advantages of the freshly made vegetable juices I’ve been drinking. It’s also caused an extreme and noticeable lessening of mental stress and anxiety which I’d experienced prior to using it. That is, the mental stress bought on by departing with my well earned money to buy the ever more expensive fresh juices in restaurants, health stores, and juice bars.

I started using my juicer to create my own interesting and sometimes weird concoctions and combinations. Wheatgrass and ginger to cleanse the lymph system and build up the blood. Barley grass and tomatoes for their high anti-oxidant values. My own original beet, celery, and ginger combination. And many more.

Before buying my juice machine, I was really beginning to feel exploited by the juice bars charging as much as five and seven dollars for a few carrots, a stalk of celery, an apple, and some honey through their industrial juicer.

In many ways I am not that health-conscious, but I really love freshly squeezed juice. I grew up without a juicing machine, and I remember that many of the bottled drinks at the time advertised that they were “made with real fruit juice”, but in reality they were sugar water with only enough “real fruit juice” in them to give the drinks a hint of the taste of the original fruit.

I was also not the healthiest of children. I had asthma and shortness of breath. I was moody, distracted, and had serious problems with attention and concentration. When I reached puberty, my skin condition went from bad to worse. I had pock marks, pimples, and acne and was embarrassed to go out.

It wasn’t until I discovered “real” juice in my early twenties, that I became aware of just how much what I ate and drank affected my over all health. My girlfriend was a health addict and, if I remember correctly, had a “Jack Lallane” juicing machine which she used religiously every day. And through her own persistence, she got me hooked on juicing as well.

It took me a while to get used to the taste and concentrations of some of the stranger juice concoctions that she came up with. But I noticed almost immediately, within a two-week period, the drastic difference in my energy levels and the clearness of my skin.

Now, even though I now have my own juicing machine, I no longer juice every day, as my schedule doesn’t permit it. But I do it as often as I can. I just wish I had started sooner.

When considering the Reebok Elliptical for your workout, there are a few things that you should be aware of.

The Reebok elliptical is a fairly large machine with mostly independent parts. This can make it difficult for you to do the maintenance and repairs on your own. Other than the fact that the Reebok elliptical can become noisy after regular use, you will have little trouble with this machine.

One of the things that many people tend to really enjoy about the Reebok elliptical is that it has such a smooth ride. It also includes upper body workout poles that move with the pedals to give you an upper body workout if you desire.

If you don’t want to use the upper body workout poles, you can opt to leave them off when assembling the Reebok elliptical. However, if you would like to leave them on the machine for periodical use, there stationary bars provided so that you can balance yourself when not using the upper body workout poles. You should be careful when you are not using the upper body workout poles because they will still move while you are exercising.

This style of machine has the fly wheel in the back like many of the ellipticals you may find in fitness centers. This feature is responsible for the smoother ride. It also has silent magnetic resistance for smooth increasing and decreasing of intensity levels. There is also impact absorption for less stress on your body.

The pedals are stationary to help keep your ride smooth. And you’ll find that the Reebok Elliptical is very stable even when you’re riding at high speeds – there’s no wobbling like the inferior machines.

If you’re wondering if the stride is comfortable, it is quite adequate for most – so you don’t have to worry about awkward movements. The Reebok elliptical provides an intense workout with virtually no impact on your joints. Owners of the Reebok elliptical highly recommend it and are, in general, happy with their choice of this machine.

Detoxification programs have long been used to help with many illnesses and conditions. Colon cleansing and colon hydrotherapy are two of the most popular detoxification therapies, and many swear by these alternative treatments for improved energy, health and vitality.

The colon is a long tube in your body that helps with the end of the digestive process, eliminates the residue of digestion from the intestinal tract and helps eliminate waste and toxins from the body. If the colon is not working properly, toxic waste and matter builds up in the body, causing fatigue and illness. Other symptoms of a “clogged” colon can include sluggishness and constipation, as the inner diameter of the colon becomes constricted with built up waste. Skin irritation, moodiness, gas and diarrhea can also be symptoms of a clogged colon.

Cleansing the colon can be essential for good health. Colon hydrotherapy cleanses the entire length of the colon by flushing the organ with filtered water. A sterile tube is inserted into the rectum and filtered water is used to irrigate the colon. As the water is cleaning the colon, an evacuation tube carries the waste away. Years of debris, toxic matter and mucus can be removed quickly and without lingering side effects.

This treatment is far more effective than an enema because it cleans the entire colon. Enemas clear the bottom half of the colon but don’t reach the uppermost portion effectively. In order to achieve maximum benefit of a clean colon, the entire organ must be flushed.

If you are suffering from constipation, lethargy and you’ve noticed that your skin doesn’t look as good as it used to, give your body a boost by trying colon hydrotherapy. You keep your skin and the outside of your body clean, so why not do the same for your insides? Do consult a licensed professional if you are convinced and wish to try out colon hydrotherapy.

If you work out at a health club you probably noticed that in the last few years there are fewer treadmills, because they are being replaced by elliptical trainers. And although treadmills still outsell ellipticals in total numbers, elliptical sales are growing at a faster rate.

What is driving the popularity of elliptical trainers? There are two factors that make elliptical trainers so appealing:

Low Impact Workout

Upper and Lower Body Workout

Benefits of a Low Impact Workout

Most types of exercise require some type of impact and/or reverse action. For example, when you walk each step is impacting force on your ankles, knees and lower back. That impact is minor in comparison to running, which can be as much as 2.5x your body weight. Over the years that constant pounding can result in long-term injuries and strains.

Elliptical trainers reduce the hazards of impact through an elliptical motion. It feels like you are naturally walking or running without any real impact or reverse action, and yet it is a weight bearing exercise that contributes to building muscle and bone density.

If you look at the side of an elliptical trainer you’ll notice the shape of the motion is like a flat circular pattern. Budget ellipticals tend to be more circular and bouncy, while quality machines have a flatter circular motion and more of an even stride. Regardless, the elliptical motion significantly reduces the impact to your joints, and that is why elliptical trainers are appealing to older individuals and people with injuries. It is becoming the exercise machine of choice for the “baby boomers.”

Benefits of an Upper and Lower Body Workout

The concept of exercising the upper and lower body simultaneously is revolutionary. An elliptical workout utilizes the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, chest, back, triceps and biceps. There is no other machine that offers this benefit. You are not only exercising more muscle group, you are also optimizing your energy expenditure. That means it is taking less time to achieve more results, like burning calories and increasing your cardio capacity. A number of elliptical trainers allow you to reverse the motion, thereby emphasizing resistance to even more parts of your muscles.

By exercising more of your muscle mass you improve fat mobilization, which results in burning more calories and building muscle endurance more efficiently. Certain experts have suggested that this dual action process reduces the perceived rate of exertion. In other words, you are exercising harder without a noticeable difference from a less strenuous workout.

The benefit of an upper and lower body workout, combined with low impact exercising, are the reasons why elliptical trainers are so popular. And there is one other feature that should be noted. In comparison to treadmills, elliptical trainers require considerably less maintenance. That is due to the fact there are fewer moving parts, and less wear from impact.

If you haven’t tried an elliptical trainer, get to your local health club or a fitness equipment store and take one for an elliptical spin. Avoid the budget models and test the machines that are at least $1,000+. They have a more natural elliptical motion and are more stable and durable.

You’ll find that an elliptical trainer can have a major impact on your health and fitness.

Oral Chelation (pronounced “key lay shun”) is simply the process by which metals, minerals and toxins are removed from the body through the use of certain agents (chelating agents) that bond with those elements – literally forming a circle around them – and flushing them out through the body’s natural waste material. One of the toxins which the chelating agents identify for removal is arterial plaque. By removing this, you can avoid build-up of plaque within the arteries and promote greater heart health.

EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid) is one of the most effective chelating agents in use today. The synthetic amino acids which make up EDTA provide the foundation on which protein is built and was first utilized in the U.S. in 1948. Designed as a treatment for those who were working in a battery factory as a treatment for lead poisoning – which was approved by the FDA – the Navy soon followed in its use of this chelating agent for sailors who absorbed lead while applying paint to ships and other government property.

In 1952, oral chelation was being used by doctors for those patients who were suffering from hardening of the arteries as a result of arterial plaque build-up. Those for whom oral chelation was prescribed exhibited a reduction in both of the areas.

Had it not been for using EDTA to treat lead poisoning at that time, physicians wouldn’t have had the opportunity to note this effect on their patients, and the impact that it had on these illnesses might never have been discovered.

While most people may think that the exposure to lead contaminants has been all but eliminated today, it has actually increased over the years and continues to be an ever-present threat in items such as tap water, residues in processed foods, cosmetics, mouthwash, toothpaste, shampoo, soap and a wide variety of hair care products.

In addition to marketable products, certain professions also provide exposure to lead contaminants. Among these are potters, battery makers, lab workers, welders, engravers, medical professionals and hairdressers, to name a few.

With so much emphasis being placed on good heart health today, oral chelation has become a real necessity for regular health maintenance. Even if you’re not among those who are in one of the high-risk professions, you’re still exposed to harmful contaminants on a regular basis and should consider this as an agent for reducing arterial plaque.

Since lead and other toxic threats can be the catalyst for physical and mental illnesses, EDTA should be integrated into your health program in order to rid the body of those agents which are already present, as well as to avoid any build-up in the future.

EDTA can be purchased online and in a variety of health stores or alternative medicine sections of some supermarkets and specialty shops. Those with a history of heart ailments, diabetes and other significant illnesses in their history should consult with their physician before attempting to use EDTA. Though everyone can benefit from the removal of toxins from their body, your physician will be able to tell you whether or not it will interrupt the effectiveness of any medications that you may currently be taking.

With so many highlighting techniques out there, it can be confusing when it comes to choosing the right type of highlights for your style and cut. But with a few pointers, you can have highlights that compliment your cut and style in a way that you’ve never imagined.

Many of today’s highlighting techniques like chunking and slicing are geared toward younger audiences with trendy haircuts. But if you have a classic cut, these techniques can give you a look that is a little mismatched or over the top. So, instead of opting for those boring frosting cap highlights that you’ve worn for the past 10 years, why not try a new technique that is just as classy but one that will bring your hair into this century.

The highlighting technique I’m talking about is multiple color weaving. By weaving 2 or 3 different colors into your strands with different densities use on different parts of your head, your stylist can create a custom highlighted look that cannot be emulated by anyone else. Granted, weaves have been around for a while, but the key to keeping them fresh is to change the color and color density to compliment your particular cut and style.

If you have ultra short hair, highlights can end up looking a bit spotted. But by combing color only onto the tips and predetermined areas of this style, your stylist can create a custom look that emphasizes your cut’s trendy lines. Why not try a splash of vibrant red in the bangs or a few blond spiked tips in the back?

Perhaps no styles are best suited for chunking and slicing than today’s textured bobs. These styles can be taken up a notch or two by simply placing a couple of streaks near the face. You can also put a few highlights on the tips of the hair. This is great especially if you wear your ends messy or flipped out. The color will work add interest and movement to your style.

In addition to trying different highlighting techniques, you can also experiment with different colors. Gone are the days of boring pale-yellow highlights. Today’s highlights are infused with color and color variations. In fact, some colors use multiple colors from a varying palette to add interest and drama. There used to be a day when one did not mix browns, blonds and reds all on the same head of hair. Now, that day is history.
