Global warming has awakened millions of people’s interest in doing more to protect and nurture our environment. Although environmental laws have been on the books for many years, there have been few dedicated environmental police forces to help society observe and respect those laws. But the tide may be turning.

Several popular social media sites have recently developed content that talks about how the law enforcement community embraces the so-called “Green” movement. For example, Yahoo! Answers’ sports a question about “Who are New York City’s Green Police”. The Green Police, it turns out, is a unit of about 20 officers who are assigned to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Another site, Wiki.Answers, addresses the question of “How do you get involved with the Green Police units”. And someone has even started a Green Police account on Twitter, posting updates about the “green” police.

The real takeaway from these kinds of sites is that people are starting to think about careers where they can protect the environment. Serving in a local green police unit might earn someone as much respect as serving in an animal protection unit. Several large cities have dedicated police officers who protect pets and other domesticated animals from abuse, and those units have inspired popular television shows. Maybe “The Real Green Police” is a show waiting to happen.

Making the Time to Volunteer

As you know, giving your time as a volunteer allows you to make your community stronger as well as aiding the needy. Doing it yourself, however, organizing your schedule so that you're free to volunteer may well squander time that could really be put to better use. Keep in mind that volunteering is more fun when your colleagues are getting involved by your side.

A volunteers’ brotherhood can strengthen the local community spirit, and naturally it will fulfill the volunteers’ goal of helping their local poor. But where do you find the time to donate your time? You’ll find it’s less hassle to get involved when a professional has organized the event. And don’t you think that if you had your co-workers volunteering alongside you you’d all have more fun?

This is a call for other companies to look to the example of far-sighted firms like Connecticut’s Adaptive Marketing LLC. As well as financial benefits programs including Your Savings Club designed for the benefit of consumers, Adaptive Marketing tackles the organizational duties to give its employees the time to reach out to the community.

Such initiatives used to be rare events — but this has come to be seen as just the beginning. The employees of Adaptive Marketing are frequently given the chance to participate in a full range of community initiatives. In these cases, the dates, times and locations of the events were announced, which made it easy for staff to know what to expect, and how much of a time commitment was required specifically.

Naturally, it’s important to let volunteers support activities that fit their strengths. Firms involved in this like Adaptive Marketing, the developers of the program Your Savings Club, present their staff with a wide range of initiatives in the local area. These may include working on green initiatives etc. In many cases, the more they enjoy it, the more productive they are, so by providing such a variety of projects Adaptive Marketing ensure that progress will be made in as many projects as possible. A one-off event or a regularly scheduled day — these are the usual ways for a firm to arrange volunteer initiatives like these, maybe at a nearby homeless shelter or the local school. There are people who claim they haven’t sufficient time, but even they may be able to squeeze in a Saturday morning spent litter picking in the park or the public library’s sale of used books.

Extending a helping hand is a practice with a storied history at many businesses. The activities of those who work at Adaptive Marketing create precious goodwill in their hometown. Helping around your hometown leaves you feeling like a better person — just the sort of thing to leave members of staff motivated both in their regular work and their volunteer activities, too. Setting out to help employees become volunteers is beneficial to everyone involved.

Along with his wife Anu, Naveen Jain will receive recognition for personal service and in honor of Intelius’ involvement in helping the programs of Overlake Service League. Overlake Service League is a non-profit organization that helps families and individuals within the boundaries of the Bellevue School District through providing emergency and family assistance as well as holiday programs. Almost 300 volunteer members contribute around 35,000 hours in community service to the organization each year, enabling it to efficiently designate majority of its funds to people in need. Trish Carpenter, Director of Fundraising & Development for Overlake Service League, recognizes the important role of Intellius in the community in the face of pressing economic times. Moreover, she acknowledges the strong partnership between the two, stressing that the firm’s management and employees have personally volunteered their time and energy at the League’s projects aside from its significant monetary contributions. Intelius has remained true to its role in community stewardship. In 2008, the firm donated nearly $210,000 to more than 12 local and national nonprofit organizations. In 2009, the company also offered paid leave to employees for their time spent volunteering at local charitable organizations. Additionally, Naveen Jain and his wife are actively involved in several non-profit organizations. The couple has donated approximately $1 million to charity over the past two years. As Naveen Jain puts it, “it is our responsibility to step up when the economy has forced others to step back.” Thus, he remains dedicated to continue and expand Intelius’ outreach endeavors, encouraging others to do their part in supporting organizations that improve the lives of people.
