To produce digital publications requires a lot of creativity, so you wouldn't want to destroy all your work with an inferior digital newsletter software package. The most important decision to take when you're making an ebrochure is picking your software supplier. It's not an insignificant question of merely picking some good format for your creation - quite the contrary, this is a much more serious choice because it can mean success or failure for your venture.

To produce digital publications requires a great deal of effort, therefore you wouldn’t want to spoil all that by picking an inferior digital newsletter software package. Actually, selecting a software provider is the most important part of producing an ebrochure. This isn’t a case of just formatting your newsletter nicely – quite the contrary, this choice is serious as it may mean success or failure for your overall venture. Out of the features you should examine in some depth, being easy to use is the most important. The software package could be the most amazing you’ve seen – but without being able to actually use it, it’s worth nothing to you… Make the time to test different packages before you select a provider for your ezine.

In creating an online publication you should also maintain awareness of the menace posed by hackers and spammers. How is the agreement secured? What protection has been put in place which prevents people from just copy-pasting your subject?

When you’ve produced a flash catalog you ought to make a business plan. Disregarding which model you choose you should consider how to use social media and ads. Search engine friendly content is also very important when considering how to market this electronic publication.

Another thing to consider are previous editions. Will the publication be available? Your service provider offering hosting probably makes the most sense with a widely available publication. Teasers work well spreading the word about your ebrochure.

Before having to address them in earnest, you should consider some more things. What’s the level of tech-support? Is it just a page of FAQs? Are there good “fix-it” tips which you can actually follow? If their response time isn’t published then ask questions. Try calling their emergency phone number to test it out. And make no mistake: the importance of tech-support really can’t be over-estimated. When you’ve decided to create a digital publication such as an electronic catalog, making the right choice of online brochure software host may make or break the accomplishment of the business. Decide carefully, and you’ll be rewarded well.

Low standard flash packages will spoil even the most creative electronic magazine. The key part of making an ebrochure is selecting your software provider. It's not about just formatting your creation nicely - indeed this is a much more serious choice because it may make or break your entire venture.

Low standard pdf to flash software packages can be the downfall of any inventive electronic magazine. Once you’re determined to produce an online catalog the key decision is to pick out your software vendor. They do much more than simply guide you in formatting the content.

The essential part of the package is, naturally, it’s intuitiveness. Of course, irrespective of how excellent the software may have been said to be, it’s no good if you yourself can’t use it… Your electronic newsletter should matter enough to you for you to test out several providers. With hacking and spamming being an online issue, protection should be another main consideration when creating a digital edition. Are there measures placed to secure your account? Is the content itself secured? Is it possible for people to just copy and paste your content or does the digital publishing software supplier have something preventing such things? Is your content protected by your online publishing software vendor from copying and pasting by the everyday reader?

Has a marketing plan been created yet? Whatever your business plan may look like, you need to consider such things, perhaps not for every single issue but rather for the business in its entirety. What use will you make of modern media? What thought has been given to dealing with advertising? Modern-day marketing means thinking about search engine requirements as you edit content.

What about paid content and free? What about offering multiple subscription possibilities? Will your content be monetized at all or is this venture not-for-profit? What about using teasers and summaries to market the ebrochure? What’s the accessibility of the ezine? Will it be private — in which case you should be able to investigate many hosting possibilities or is it public? You will be best hosting directly with the supplier. And what will you do about back-isues? Technical support is a big consideration in the choice of vendor. Is it emergency only technical help? How long is the response time? How is their FAQ page? Maybe such things seem minor, however should there be an emergency, you’ll be relieved you considered this early on.

Your ebrochure’s profit, after its been launched, is decided by the quality of digital publishing software package vendor. Consider your choice if you want to succeed.

Testing a website for accessibility can be a time-consuming and laborious process. The free Web Accessibility Toolbar can do most of the hard work for you though and is an indispensable tool for anyone interested in accessibility.

The toolbar is not an automated testing tool so does require manual work from you. It’s therefore able to avoid the many problems with automated accessibility testing tools. It doesn’t require any technical knowledge so even the biggest technophobe can check their website for accessibility!

Installing the Web Accessibility Toolbar

You can download the toolbar for free from http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/resources/toolbar, and after you install it, it will sit in the toolbar area of Internet Explorer. The total file size is just 550kb so the download won’t take too long.

The toolbar only works on Internet Explorer on Windows, so if Internet Explorer isn’t your first-choice browser you’ll have to switch browsers when using it. (Alternatively, you can download the Web Developer Toolbar for Firefox which offers similar, but not identical, functionality.)

Using the Web Accessibility Toolbar

Now you’ve downloaded and installed the Web Accessibility Toolbar you can start using it! There are 12 buttons in total on the toolbar, each with a down arrow to the right of the text. If you click on the down arrow for any of these buttons then a dropdown menu appears with all the available options (alternatively you can use the keyboard shortcut keys assigned to each button).

Checking for document structure

One of the most useful buttons is the seventh, Structure. It’s essential that the structure within the HTML code accurately reflects the visual structure of the page. This is so that visually impaired web users using screen readers can gain an understanding of the page structure.

Some of the most useful items in the Structure dropdown menu include:

Headings – Shows which items on the page are labelled as headings within the HTML code. The main page heading should be a heading level one and other headings should be heading level two. Any sub-heading of a heading level two should be a heading level three, then heading level four and so on. Heading numbers should always be sequential – a heading level four shouldn’t follow a heading level two if there’s no heading level three. Headings are especially useful for screen reader users as they can call up a list of headings and jump straight to the section in which they’re most interested.

List items – Shows which items on the page are labelled as lists within the HTML code, by displaying < li > next to any list item. Lists can be horizontal or vertical, and all navigation should be marked up as a list item. Lists are very useful for screen reader users as the screen reader will announce the number of items in the list before reading the list items.

Fieldset / Label – Shows which items on the page are called labels within the HTML code. After selecting Fieldset / Label, the text next to each form should say the word label next to it – if not, that text hasn’t been called a label in the code.

Table border – Places a border around each table. Nested tables within tables can cause huge difficulties for screen reader users. After selecting this item, the first table will have a black border the second blue, then green, yellow, orange, red and purple. If you see any of these last four colours it’s time to take a good look at the code behind the page.

Table cell order – Shows the order in which the page is read out to screen reader users (if a table is used for layout). Hopefully, the order should be reasonably logical.

Checking the site works under all circumstances

It’s important that your website doesn’t depend on any one type of technology, or users whose browsers don’t support that technology may be unable to access your site. You can check to see if your site depends on any one technology:

Images > Toggle Image/Alt – One of the most useful functions on the toolbar, replaces images with their ALT, or alternative, text. Alt text is read out to screen reader users or displayed to web users with images turned off, instead of the image itself (e.g. users on dial-up modems may turn off images to speed up the download time of pages). It’s essential that the ALT text provides an adequate description of the image.

IE Options > Toggle JavaScript – Turns off JavaScript. After selecting this option, work through the pages on your website – is the whole site still accessible to you?

IE Options > Toggle ActiveX – Turns off ActiveX controls. Again, after selecting this, work through your website to see if the whole site is still accessible to you.

IE Options > Toggle CSS – Turns off CSS. Are pages still legible? If CSS is used for layout then you will see the page content in the order that it’s read out to screen reader users. (If you toggle image/alt after this, you’ll have a complete visual representation of what screen reader users will hear.)

Other useful accessibility checks

There’s a huge amount of functionality available on the Web Accessibility Toolbar, but some of the other most important accessibility checks you can carry out with the toolbar include:

Validate > W3C HTML validator > Validate HTML – Checks whether the page is based on valid HTML or not. If the page is not valid, you’ll be told why.

CSS > Deprecated HTML > Deprecated elements & attributes – Checks for code that shouldn’t be used and is being phased out. A new window will open containing the HTML code – anything in red is deprecated and should be removed.

Doc info > Page speed report – Examines all the files used to display the web page and prepares a report on the average download speed for that page for different Internet connections.

Doc info > List links – Displays a list of all on-page links. Screen reader users can call up a list of links and jump straight to the page in which they’re most interested, so it’s essential that link text makes sense out of context. Link text such as ‘click here’ should be avoided at all costs!

Colour > Greyscale – Shows the page in greyscale. Great for checking colour contrast.
Other functionality

Other functionality

The Web Accessibility Toolbar offers some other interesting functionality:

Resize – See how your website looks for users on 640 x 480px, 800 x 600px and 1024 x 768px screen resolutions.

Tools > Simulations – Put yourself in the shoes of a special needs users with these fascinating simulations.

Conclusion

The Web Accessibility Toolbar offers an enormous amount of functionality. Download it for free from http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/resources/toolbar and start using it. Without any technical expertise, you can perform a mini-accessibility audit on any site in just a couple of minutes.

The internet can either help or hurt your job hunt - it's up to you.

A modern job hunting campaign is by nature fairly complex. While the web has offered a variety of new channels, it also creates increased competition for choice jobs and possible challenges for job hunters.

Job search needs to be thought of as a highly personal, highly directed marketing process where you are the product. Your resume is an advertisement. Your extended network of associates is your lead generating machine.

So where does the internet fit in? At AA-Careers, we recently posted a job on a popular job site and got over 650 responses in a calendar week. For one opening. That’s increased competition.

Had a strong person called us before we ran the posting, they could have secured the job before getting all that competition. How? By finding an employee at our office who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone knew about of the job for at least 10 days before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming available soon?

Be careful to check your application materials thoroughly before submitting them. When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily taken out with a quick triage process. How? The same way any employer would. By rejecting resumes where the objective didn’t match our job posting. By eliminating candidates whose cover letters gave us causes not to employ them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating job hunters whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by rejecting candidates who didn’t trouble to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.

So the good news is that job sites give you a sense of who is hiring, and for what kinds of positions. But once those jobs are posted, the competition is intense. You can still compete, if you have a well honed resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.

Another issue to be aware of is how quickly you can be checked on on the internet. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some Facebook comments that were in questionable taste. Nothing larcenous, but enough to tilt our thoughts about who to choose.

AA-Careers provides a comprehensive set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.

Be careful out there, and good hunting!

The ten-day Deaflympics started off last weekend in Taipei, Taiwan and so far everything is flowing smoothly. As expected, the teams from Mainland China have performed well in most of the sporting competitions including table tennis and badminton, where they easily outclassed their rivals with their wilson badminton rackets.

In badminton, China progressed to the final eight after beating Bulgaria (3-2) and Switzerland (5-0). As per game rules, each team must compete in five matches composed of men’s and women’s singles, mixed doubles, men’s and women’s doubles.

In table tennis, the team outlasted Germany and Hong Kong to secure their place among the finalists in the sport. The basketball team was not as fortunate, losing to Greece 42-66.

The Deaflympics is a quadrennial sporting event composed of six disciplines. These are swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, basketball and tennis. China has taken part in this prestigious tournament for hearing-impaired athletes for the fifth. The country sent nearly eighty participants.

Chinese delegation’s secretary-general Zhao Sujing said that it is one of the government’s efforts to develop their hearing-impaired athletes and help them meet new friends from all over the world. He added that the athletes are hoping on improving its communication with the players in Taiwan.

The opening ceremony was a grand one, with more than sixty hearing-impaired dancers from China’s Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe performing artistic dances.

The performance garnered a lot of applause since this had been seen during the closing ceremony of the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.
